How to build a best painted army part 3

Show piece, center piece and eye catchers.

 These will be the key to wining the best painted. They all differ slightly from each other though

Show Piece

This is usually your leaders and standard bearers. They can be similar to the eye catchers but they usually stand out more.

This is where alot of you time is spent. You can spend as much time on one of these as you would a whole unit. The idea here is to show of any special talents you may have, as in you may make great bases so go nuts on these guys or your freehand might be good so this is the place to do it.

But don’t despair if you don’t have special talents you can still make a show piece.
Show piece models should be you army leader and unit leaders and other character models. I like to put my leaders on larger bases so they stand out and this is all you really need to do. Make sure your base follows your theme and build your character accordingly. As you can see below my Spartan General is leaping into battle. This is in keeping with the Spartan theme and wasn’t very difficult to do, Just a reposition of the arms and changing the legs and a wire through the torso to raise him up. No real special skills involved. He was given a little extra attention paint wise.



With my ogre general he had to be the biggest ogre in the group. This took a lot of modding I also had his sword and luck knoblars built onto his base in order to make him stand out more. This took a bit more skill as I also did a bit more on the free hand but overall not too difficult. One thing to note with Show pieces is that you only need a few maybe one per unit or even just the main characters, This will also depend on time available to you.


I made my Spartan general before I did my first troop as a test piece and decided that I wanted one in every unit.

Center Piece.

Every army needs one of these. It needs to be seen from a few tables away and will probably take the most time to make and paint. With warhammer at least there is usually a large beast or warmachine that you can use for the purpose. Warmachine is similar especially with Collosus's.  Below you will see my Rhinox riders. I made these big and bright and built up the bases to make sure they stood out. 


In all infantry armies this can be a problem but there are ways around it. For instance in the Spartan army I made a unit filler where 2 Spartans are attacking a Minotaur, you could have 4 troops raising a banner or something similar. The center pice should define your army so give it a bit of thought before jumping in. And once again one center piece is good but you can do more if you have the chance. As Ive said before if you hear someone go to a mate and tell them they have to come look at this then you know you’ve got it right.

Eye catchers

Now they can be show pieces or center pieces but really what they are is subtle things that people discover as they look at your army. The longer someone looks at your army the more votes so you want to give them stuff to look at. You don’t have to put allot of time in but they should be in theme with your army and can be amusing but don’t have to be.

In my ogre army I put a lot of eye catchers. If  you look at the knoblar unit you can see coconut clappers and knoblars riding ponies. These didn’t take long to make in fact the theme for my army was based on this mini.

In my Spartan army I had the movement trays with piles of dead bodies on them. In my Chaos army I had different mutations and a unit with the seven deadly sins. You don’t need a lot of time but they are worth putting two or three in the army and one in each unit would be good. As Ive said the longer someone is looking at your army the better and if they come for a second look and notice something different it will really help out.

My cryx army has alot of detail to the bases. Took a bit of work but once its finished it will be worth the effort


So I hope this has helped out. The main points are in my opininion
  1. Limited pallete
  2. Bright paint job.
  3. Unique or little used idea
  4. Show piece
  5. Center piece
  6. Eye catchers
  7. Themed force

So anyone who can hold a paint brush and use a knife and glue could do this. It helps if you do a little research before you start your army but anything can be your inspiration. The further you go from the hobbie to get your inspiration the more likely you will come up wit something new so don’t be afraid to read google or phone a friend.

KGK SGL September 2013

The wash up

So I started the day expecting 12 players. After a few phone calls I was thinking we would have 14 players.

...... And then the rot set in. Gen Y true to their nature decided that it was too hard to turn up and lets not bother to tell anyone.

First up Allen dropped out. If I hadn't got someone to call I wouldn't have known. Ok well maybe we can still get twelve. Then the number 5 australian player scared of the flogging he would recieve didnt bother to call either but dropped out. Ok we can have 10 players its still good. So at 8:50 no Matt man. Frantic calling to no avail Mattman a no show. Took the day of work so his poor mother had to cover for him and not to be seen. His next invite will be lost in the mail.

SO we have 9 players and byes suck monkey b@!!$ so Ado and I played the two headed giant. We are one player. I opted to let Ado go first and as we only had 8 players it was only a 3 game tourney.

It was a great day. We had Chunky and Gelfy come up from Lysmore and Graham Marshal a newbie to the world of warmachine join us.

The final Match was against Kort and Chunky both on 2 wins and after a tight tussle Chunky came out the overall winner.

Update: I missed a few games. Kort should have 1 extra new player and 2 extra new factions Jay should have 2 extra new factions

5th sept. kort vs jay, EStryker tier4 (cygnar) vs Bethane (legion). Mass carnage on both sides of the table. His heavy beasts were unable to destroy both stormclads, during my feat turn I killed both the beasts and advanced and swung at Beth with a boost boost (that part of the feat is just silly :D) but he transferred to a shredder, it died and Beth took 5ish damage. His turn he went for it with some arched spells a light beast and a spell from a shard member surviving a free strike and a lone spell slinger dude. Dust settled and stryker was left on 6 due to a couple poor rolls. My follow up turn 3focus to the jack in combat with Beth and a positive charge on the jack within 3" of it finished the game.

7th sep. kort vs jay. PHaley (cygnar) vs pLylyth (legion) he had Rhys as his second list so I dropped Haley just in case

Rather non eventful game with jay staying back and shooting me with everything and me responding with the same manner. I popped feat too early and it had no effect. Jay went for a caster kill with plylyth carnivean and CRA from striders. Lylyth had to spend the first shot to clear out a lightning pod for LOS to Haley and did poor on the damage roll. Carni was out for a spray 10! Just.... And the striders rolled average. My turn plays out with colossal shooting lylyth after tem barrier was cast. Haley also shot her and a lone B13 member. After that the stormGuard went in. Hit for 5ish, miss,miss,miss,miss and then hit!! Game was done

9Sep WARMACHINE Monday kicked off with kort V jay.

Jays two lists were Plylyth and Absilonia? I stuck with Estryker and Phaley. I choose Phaley once again coz stryker just won't handle all the poison shots and stealth striders. Jay dropped Plylyth again. 

Jay won the roll for first and did so promptly. 

Everything of his ran with all buffs put on lylyth and bttle group, as all good players do. Much the same happend for me with arc shield and tough went on stormguard. Hayley tried a shot but was out due to stealth which I forgot and it hurt my plans as I was going to spell the unit to death! Oh well she was, safe? Behind the guards. Stormwall trampled and placed a pod killing a strider and damaging the solo. Gun mages advanced to the hill with the colossal and tried to shoot em some stealth, but couldn't hit. 

Jay replied with all his units shooting and after the dust settled two guards were down and two on the ground due to tough. Lylyth came out of the forest and shot at a tempest taking him out. Carnivean tried to spray at 3 of the mages but missed. 

My turn went off with 3 focus on stormy and kept arc shield with squire. I contemplated for a while deciding what to do as all of his force was basically on my side of the table a flanking raptors and Anissa too close for comfort. I decided to go for it, as lylyth had come out of hiding the previous turn. We went with Haley going first popping feat and giving the mages dead eye. StormGuard tied up maybe 2 raptors running thru the forest thanks to the piper and charging some striders. With an insane amount of attack only one connected and two died in total due to an electric leap however the gun mages advanced and brutal shot at lylyth eventually chewing thru the transfers and leaving her on 3? Damage. So the stormwall went for it. Needing 13 to hit with 3 big gun shots they were all boosted...... Miss....miss... 13!!! That was that:)

Warmachine wednesday is back

11 Sep Warmachine Monday/Wednesday was with Eddie vs kort, cryx v cygnar. We had a Asphy 3 tier list and Terminus. I was running my Estryker teir list and Phaley. 

Eddy dropped Terminus and as I don't have all of my stryker list with me I dropped Phaley. Eddie won the roll for first and took it, as he wanted a couple of turns to be able to run. And everything did so. 

I ran with storm guards and gave them tough and arc shield. Haley was "just" out of a temp barrier to his colossal. Gun mages advanced into position on the right flank and the colossal dropped a pod (why not) and two covering fires.

Eddie's turn was more running and his colossal drew first blood onto mine with a unicorn shot. He ran a mechanic solo onto my farthest left flag (as the centre one was the one too disappear).

I pounded for awhile but ended up feating in my next turn and shooting down some dead with Haley. My storm guard received the pathfinder ability thanks to the piper and charge/ran. They cleared out a few dead and two of the brute thralls. My colossal tried to catch the stitch surgeon but she sack pawned.....twice, I was sure the second one was out, but.... So we shot at the last brute and took him out and of course layed out some templates. Gun mages did much of the same but only half the unit was in feat range so they only managed to take out 4 or so dead. I pass the turn... 

Edd replies with Termi feating and casting berserk on himself he went in and cleared 5 guards, leaving him on a stoopid amount of Arm. The kraken took out a few more guards, feeding Termi. I think at this stage he's at Arm 28? 

So my turn started and I look over at the clock...... I hav 5 or so min left :( oh well, I go for it. i try getting the "crit" to knock Termi down from the mages bullets, but dice says no so the colossal goes in and at dice minus 8 i do a total of 7? To Termi. 

His turn starts with Termi allocating 3 to kraken and Termi upkeeps a spell. Kraken kill colossal and Termi charges Haley, nuff said....

11 Sep At Good games. Jay played some random. So Jay vs Tim (Khador). No details but Jay gets play paint and new player for 3 points

16/9/13 Warmachine Monday. Was a perfect day for gaming out at redbank plains, finally a lil wet weather.
So we had Kort with Cygnar (Phaley and Estryker) and Jay with legion (Plylyth and Abby) 

I dropped Haley again and jay took Abby. Jay went first and everything ran with buffs put on for good measure.

I ran most of my stuff and arc shield went out on Murdock's boomhowlers and temporal barrier catching the arch angel and bolt thrower (happy days :D)!Stormwall layed out some covering fire and dropped a pod and the booms called super tough and ran to screen Haley who decided to dominate the objective this turn. End of my turn and I decided to place the objective within my zone hoping to get a good start to the scenario. 

I pass the turn 

Jays turn plays out with the arch angel shooting the boomhowlers in front of Haley, he toughs but dies to the last strafe shot. Jay "activates the Ravagore, casts his animus, boosts to hit and damage" and deals 12 to Haley setting her on fire, needing 13 on three dice he rolls trip 6's!! 

Wat are ya gunna do, these things happen in dice games. So I just stop jay from anything farther, roll one dice for fire, doesn't go out, so I shake his hand.

25 sep Warmachine games at Jay's tonight: Played Jay, My Prime Magnus Vrs Jay's Absylonia

Jay had an Archangel, Ravagore, Nephilim Bolt Thrower, shredder and smattering of support models

I had 2 Nomads, Renegade , Gunmages with UA with marshaled Mule, Tactical Arcanist Corps and support.

Scenario was Chemical Reaction. Jay had the first turn and like a good player got all his buffs out (No paying for them again) and run crap up the table staying central to the table with his force.

I also got my buffs out (also no paying for upkeeps) moved towards his army and his zone, popped my feat in the first turn to run my battle group towards a wall between the zones threatening his army.

Jay moved both the bolt thrower and ravagore to take shots at my caster (ops!) caster took no damage due to Jay's crappy roll but was set on fire (Shit!) the Archangel moved to engage one of my Nomads hitting over a wall and doing damage but still rolling on the derppy side!

this turn shot my once per game renegade shot knocking down but the ravagore and bolt thrower, ignoring the archangel both my nomads put these two beasts down and my caster dominated my zone for a point. Fire did 1 point of damage to Magnus and went out in the following turn.

At this stage the achangel was engaged with two Nomad (one really beaten up) and a Mule and losing two key pieces (Ravagore and bolt thrower) was giving Jay fits, he continued to roll crappy dice on my jacks - Killing the Mule with Absylonia and leaving one of my Nomad in a few hit points. 

I continue to throw out damage and dominate my own zone till this forces Jay to use the Achangel to take a ranged assassination attempt on Magnus which as the game has been going failed miserably (Derpy Dice) 

   Win to Me by scenario, fully painted.   3 points
   Jay get play  Jay's army by the way is starting to look amazing looking forward to a review of his army on the main website soon.

Second Game vrs Kort (my Drake Mcbain!! vers EStriker)

Kort had a stom wall and storm knights with 2 gun attachment and UA, black 13th and normal Cygnar Support 

I was running the gallon (Colossus show down!) Boomhowlers and Forge guard and support. 

Mission was destruction. 

Early turns involve moving toward the objective and putting out our buffs as per most games of warmachine. One note the booms took 4+ tough and counter measure and run straight at Korts force - this is my favorite tactic against Shooting armies. 

This game can be summed up with if you frustrate your opponent into making mistakes you win. 

Counter Measures Booms that cannot die stop a cygnar army from doing most, not all of their cool stuff and the galleon was having a field day doing damage to objectives and anything else he could get in line of sight. and Kort just couldn't escape the countermeasured Boomhowlers not through a lack of trying. 

I think Kort just got sick of my hard control and ran Striker straight through my lines on full camp then got crit smite buy a forge guard and stomped to death by the galleon - Sorry Kort! I feel bad but a win is a win 

Win for me Caster Kill, fully painted.

Ogrebane's Omnium-Gatherum Part 2

Collossus legs

I had to have a rethink of the legs. I wanted the big fella to be walking up the beach but the rest of my army was built the other way around so I repositioned the legs like below.


 I need to do a few small tweeks with the legs and they will be done. Im still not sure how I will shape the greeves yet but I dont think they will be too elaborate as I want to see the pistons etc.

Instead of starting a new thread I'll just put the update here. I remodelled the legs. They are nnow ready for paint. I added some crates to the base and I will add extra details as I go.



Ok for now the legs are done. I may do some battle damage later but paint wise it will do. I still have to do the water effects on the base and maybe a small bit of deco (Like a bot fishing on the pier)

Ogrebane's Omnium-Gatherum

I have a collection of Tutorials on this site but I thought I might also put my wips here as well.

So what is an omnium-gatherum

Oxford dictionay Definition is:
om·ni·um-gath·er·um

NOUN:
A miscellaneous collection; a hodgepodge.

ETYMOLOGY:
Latin omnium, genitive pl. of omnis, all; see op- in Indo-European roots + gatherum (mock-Latinate alteration of gather)


So this will be a collection of works that I will display on this page. I have another page that I display my minis on but I dont see the need to maintain two pages so I will probably move them to here as well

I started this page mainly because I finally got Eddie (Grimjaw) to post a wip of his Wold Wrath and I didn't want to be out done by him.

The first thing I will be showing here will be my wips for my Galleon.

One of the things I dislike about the Warmachine minis is the chicken legged jacks. Apart from the extremely narrow waistes that hold up the 14 ton monsters.

The Galleon in my opinion is a very Ugly mini and the chicken legs on it dont help at all. Ive found with PP that the better the stats of a model the worse the miniature is. Maybe its a way to sell them I dont know but one thing about the galleon is its uglyness. So I am going to see if I can fix it. I liked the way the legs looken on the Cygnar Colossus and a toyed with buying them and putting them on but decided against it.

There will be alot of technical things required for this build. Im not a mechanic so I may get the leg assembly's all wrong but it is fantasy after all so hopefully any little mistakes can be forgiven.

So first up is a bunch of wips for the base. I want it to fit in with the rest of the pirates so the paint scheme has already been chosen.








Hopefully this will look better when I add the water over the top. I will tint some clear resin with a blueish green then build waves over the top once the right leg is put in place.


Still need to do some highlight and shading. I will also add some things to the warf like barrels and crates.


These are some wip shots of how I want the legs to look. I origanally was going to cut out the knee joint and lower leg but Ive decided to just cut out the lower leg and build it onto the knee joint.





OK not the greatest pic but I think you can get the gist of what I am trying to do here. The hardest part will be shaping the greave (I think thats what its called) I will try and shape it similar to the other pirate jacks.

So next time I will hopefully be able to show a fully formed hip and leg section.

Slow Growth league 35 point Torney Sep 28th

Our 35pt Slow growth tourney will be held on 28th September

All are welcome to attend although if you havent played before it would be a good idea to contact one of us to get so additional info on how we play.

So the rules are the same as the last tourney (except for points value) but I'll post them here for you all to read.

35pt Slow Growth Tourney rules

We will be using the Steamroller 2013 with the following changes.

Army is 35 points.
Must be your slow growth army (This is the one you use in all slow growth games)
Must be fully painted. 3 colours and based. (Not really required but encouraged)
Turns will be 8 minutes with 4 minute extension.
4 games will be played with random for the first game and ranked for the rest. (SR says 3 for 8 or less but we play 4 games sorry Ado days too short with only 3 games)
After the first game the players will set up there army for the beauty pageant. Players will pick first and second and the totals will be tallied at the end of the tourney.

Slow growth tourney points rules

1 point for playing a game with your slow growth army
1 point if your army is fully painted (It should be painted)
1 point for playing a player you have never played before.
1 point for playing a faction you have never played
1 point for a win
1 point for a caster kill.

I am also adding some extra ways to make points when you play a tourney

1 point for playing a tourney game with your Slow growth army.
1/4 point for every objective point you get.
4 points for wining the tourney
1 point for any trophy you win.

1 point for holding a KGKT coin at the end of the tourney

Reroll coin rules
The holder of the coin may spend the coin to either reroll 1 dice or reroll all dice in one roll. The coin cannot be used to reroll a reroll. To spend a coin you hand it to your opponent. He may then spend it as above. The coin can only be used once a turn but may be used as many times during a games as turns permit. You may hold as many coins as you like. Coins are only usable in the year they are issued.

You can acquire league point with the coin in the following ways.
1 point if you have a coin at the start of the tourney
1 point for every game you hold a coin and don't spend it.
1 point if you have a coin at the end of the tournament.
You can only acquire league points with the coin if it is a slow growth tourney.
You may only use the coin at KGK tourneys.

Coins are issued as follows.
At the start of the year the person in the first tourney of the year who is the lowest person on the league table who has actually played at least one game will be issued a coin.
The person who finishes lowest on the table will be given a coin.

I believe Eddie and Ado hold a coin becuase I Jay spent his coin in a normal game last month (and still failed his leadership roll :D ). Not sure who got the coin in Jun but there are 3 of them out there now.

Trophies
There should be 6 trophies this month. The person who won the trophie last time has to make the trophie this time.
Trophie making rules are as follows.
  1. It must cost under $5
  2. It must take less than 3 hours to make
  3. It must be made by the person who won it last. 
The trophies are as follows
  1. First place. (Needs a cool name like Field marshal trophie or something) (Ado to make)
  2. Best painted army (This needs a cool name to like Parade ready or some such I'll have to think about it) (I won that one so me again)
  3. Assassin: Fastest caster kill (I think Parfiet won this one)
  4. Genocide: Highest army points killed (Matt got this 1 from memory)
  5. Slayer award: for the model (selected by the player) who takes the most boxes during the tourney.
  6. Fat Controller: The person who claims the most control points. (Eddie to make)
We also have the coin for the last place.


So as I see it just for playing you should walk out with 12 points on the table (and maybe 13 cause you should win a trophy). Give me a message if you intend to come along cause if I get 8 players I will register it on the wanking ranking site.
